Airport Security

Acoustic Alternative Rock Band from Cape Town

In the beginning there were two. Two elementary school friends meet ten years after having last seen each other on Cape Towns’ Clifton 4th beach. Both realize that the other now plays an instrument and an impromptu jam session in which their first song is born.

That being said, Airport Security’s roots stem from a place where acoustic is the only way to go. Airport Security front man, Zayd “Sam” Carelse sites his songwriting style as “I swear if I knew how it happened, I’d tell you” with Lead guitarist, Riaz Patel being the man to complete the picture by combining strong, melodic and catchy lead to a solid foundation. They’ve been a song writing team since 2006 and after compiling albums worth of material, to which their friends all knew the words, decided it was time to take things to the public and see how they felt about it.

The response was incredible. Riding the free distribution wave of Bluetooth technology they have managed to build a growing fan base and a reputation which precedes them. Using facebook as a video blog style tool they have managed to entice their fans with something as personal as intimate jam sessions in which the viewers are able to see the songs they love being created. The band sites their reason for doing this as being true to their roots. “We started out by writing songs on the beach and showing them to our friends. We’re just doing that to a wider audience now.” They most recently acquired Bassist, Shakeel “Frank” Parker and Drummer, Reyaad Lodhewyk and have completed the already soul piercing melodies with a beat to pull your heart along with it.

Many things have happened quite by accident for what critics are calling “The nice guy meets rock n’ roll”. Sam’s modest “Thank you. I’m glad you liked it but we aren’t that good” response to my congratulations after their last gig is just evidence of that. Their first outing to an open mic night led to somebody noticing and contacting producer and director of their music video “Open Car Crash”, Brooke Fasani, who funded the project. Their popularity on the streets of Cape Town is increasing day by day amongst many who seek refuge in the deep, raw and emotionally moving music they produce. There’s something about music that everybody loves, the ability to reach deep into your heart and soul and speak to you directly, which these guys have managed to do.

No doubt we will be seeing great things from these four young men because we’re already hearing great things.
