Stunning Line up for OLD MUTUAL SUMMER SUNSET CONCERTS AT KIRSTENBOSCH 2009/2010

Summer kicks off with a great start as the majestic Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden gears up for its best yet series of Sunday afternoon concerts. This year’s Old Mutual Summer Sunset Concerts run from November 22, 2009 to April 4, 2010 and enjoying a concert at this magnificent outdoor venue is one of the highlights of summer in Cape Town attracting residents and tourists in their droves. Take a picnic and settle in for the best music that South Africa has to offer.

That icon of South African music, Johnny Clegg, opens the season on Sunday, 22 November and the line up of artists for the season reads like the Who’s who of South African Music. From the eclectic series of Old Mutual Encounters to the regular Sunday afternoon concerts this is a season of extraordinary talent and diversity boasting the best on the music scene today.

The ever popular Freshlyground, Just Jinjer, Watershed, Zebra and Giraffe, aKING, Goldfish, The Dirty Skirts, Goldfish and Prime Circle, the Jonny Cooper Orchestra and the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, are some of the greatest names in the local industry. Fokofpolisiekar makes a welcome return and some of the newest artists to be hitting the headlines make their debut at this venue. Young, up and coming names such as Jesse Clegg, Ashtray Electric, The Pretty Blue Guns, Josie Fields, Farryl, Purkiss and Dan Patlansky are new additions to the line up bringing their popular sounds to the stage and delighting more and more fans.

The Old Mutual Encounters concerts provide a major attraction and patrons can enjoy artists from different genres collaborating for special once-off performances, bringing an exciting slant to these already well attended events. It’s a season of jazz, funk, soul, R&B, rap and folk as the top artists and SAMA award winners groove to the beat and let their hair down.

Whatever your musical taste there will be a concert that will delight you this year.

Launching the 2009/2010 season on 22 November is Johnny Clegg bringing the Scatterlings of Africa together on home soil. Having two Cleggs on the lineup is a coup and fans of Jesse Clegg need to make a date for 6 December to see this rising young star. Get into Christmas mood with the Jonny Cooper Orchestra - Big Band mellow sounds resonating through the garden on 13 December whilst hot new rock bands, Ashtray Electric and Pretty Blue Guns take the stage on 27 December. Taking us into the New Year promising newcomers, A Fistful of Diamonds with Josie Fields, Farryl Purkiss and Dan Patlansky, captivate audiences with soul, alternative pop and blues on 3 January. Freshlyground will be there in force on January 10 and Zebra and Giraffe play their eclectic sounds on January 17. Join us on 24 January when Fokofpolisiekar take to the stage whilst on 7 February aKing bring their chart topping power tunes to the stage.
Contemporary rock band Just Jinjer make a popular return from a decade overseas on February 21 followed by Prime Circle, whose third album has just gone platinum, on 28 February. Back once more to send the crowds crazy is Goldfish on March 7, whilst indie-rockers The Dirty Skirts mesmerise on March 14. For those who enjoy more classical sounds the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, with soloist classic guitarist James Grace presenting Concerto De Aranjuez, bring some favourite concertos to the audience. All generations will delight in Watershed on March 28, not pop, not rock, simply their own hugely popular sound.

The Old Mutual Encounters series brings together some of our talented divas, groups and musicians offering a blend of music that is truly the soul of Africa. Mark your diary for the Old Mutual Encounter on 29 November when jazz diva Claire Phillips takes the stage on 29 November with composer /performer and ex Blk Sunshine member, Neo Muyanga. If its soul you’re looking for then 31 January brings some of South Africa’s greats together with an afternoon ranging from soul, rap and R&B. Enjoy the sounds of Lira with Hip Hop Pantsula and RJ Benjamin on this sunny Sunday.
Valentine’s Day February 14 is a day to enjoy romance and with this encounter we see all girl group Jamali (best pop album award 2009) joined by MNet Idols stars Jody and Sasha Lee and topped with Soulstone for a memorable Sunday. On Easter Sunday 4 April to wind up the whole summer concert series we can enjoy the Old Mutual Two Oceans Concert with Gang of Instrumentals, who’s ‘Kassi Flava” (kwaito, gospel, R& B , and Hip Hop) tunes, together with Tidal Waves and Tumi Molekane: reggae and honest lyrics join forces to close the season.
