AFRIKAAPS in Holland
Emile Jansen
altWhen Afrikaaps opened in Cape Town in 2010 it was met with wide critical acclaim, the press described as it ’spectacularly successful’, ‘exciting and engaging, funny and inexpressibly entertaining’, ‘a slick and professional celebration, visually and artistically provocative’.

Afrikaaps went on to win a Kyknet Fiesta award for Best Music Driven Production, and earned Monox, aka Moenier Adams, 2 awards for best upcoming professional artist for his appearance in Afrikaaps.

AFRIKAANS/AFRIKAAPS: in South Africa and the world over, Afrikaans is widely perceived to be a ‘white’ language and is often associated with the oppressive apartheid regime.
Afrikaans actually developed as a bridging language between the Dutch (European) settlers, the original Khoi San indigenous inhabitants of the Cape, and the slave population who were brought to the region by the VOC. Although it is a very subtle name change, Afrikaaps represents the liberation of Afrikaans from the negative stigma still associated with the language. Afrikaaps is part of a bigger movement of efforts in South Africa to reclaim the Afrikaans language for all who speak it.

Afrikaaps – the documentary is made by filmmaker Dylan Valley and recently won Best South African Documentary at the Cape Winelands Festival (CWFF) 2011. Web Music Sharing Comes To SA
Source: Channel 24.com
Boom FM has opened its virtual doors, becoming one of the first major South African music discovery and sharing ventures in the vein of Spotify and Turntable.fm.

The service - based in Stellenbosch - boasts a number of options for users, according to Tech Central. But at its core is the basic function of allowing artists to provide music for inclusion and set up artist pages, and for users to share playlists, discover new music, and eventually to purchase.

The focus is almost purely SA-based up-and-coming music acts, and tracks are currently streamed at 64kbps, which according to founder Pete Matthaei, helps with bandwidth costs and piracy issues.

Eventually users will be able to download their favourite tracks. The independent artist will pocket most of the money generated from these purchases.

The music is vetted and "approved" for inclusion on the site by a small team of content producers, and the brand intends to make itself known via presence on the local music scene. Matthaei told Tech Central: "We want to provide a platform for bands that are flying under the radar or otherwise getting swamped by big international acts."

About Maestro
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Just like a “Jack In The Box”, you never really know what on earth you are going to get. In fact, the only thing you really know for sure is that he’ll come out blasting music. He might wear red, he might wear black, and he might even paint himself a smile. Either way he’ll keep you guessing what’s in the box …

Just don’t confuse this ‘Jack In The Box’ with a ‘Jack of all trades’

He’ll devise an auditory explosion of never-heard-before beats while mastering Electronica / Dance / Heavy Metal / Rock / R&B / Hip-Hop / Movie soundtracks / Psy Trance / Ambient / Trance / House / Electro to perfection.

Maestro doesn’t mess around….
He doesn’t dabble. He’s beyond that.
He’s Maestro.

Sabretooth
test
Sabretooth are an 80's inspired/Progressive/Hard Rock band hailing from Cape Town.

Sabretooth consists of six highly talented musicians who love to play 80’s inspired progressive hard rock, determined to bring you a sound both visually and aurally impressive. Try keep your bottom jaw up as you witness lightning-fast guitar solos, blurry-handed keyboard playing, powerful yet groovy bass lines, heart-stopping drum patterns and powerful and catchy melodic vocal lines.

For a band so clearly capable of putting on a technical master class, the melody and energetic party atmosphere burns through like a shining light. Each instrument is the threading, which weaves a highly addictive sound that will have your head banging from the first note.

In the short time of the band’s existence, Sabretooth have shared the stage with the likes of Seven Year Kismet (UK) and Horse the Band (USA) on their SA tours. They’ve also played at Winterfest Metal Fest ’10, Whiplash Metal Fest ’10, Noisefest Alternative Festival ’10, Ramfest Alternative Festival ’11 and Synergy Live Music Festival ’10, and joined Reverse the Sands on their tour to Port Elizabeth in April ‘10. The enjoyment of Sabretooth shows are evident in consistent rave reviews in LMG magazine, Metal4Africa.com and Facebook.

If you haven’t had a chance to watch them, do so before they escape this country’s grasp. Their fierce following grows with every performance. This band is heading straight to the top, so sit back and be prepared for a wild ride.

The Anti Retro Vinyls
test
The Anti Retro Vinyls

Due to unforeseen complications,THE OTHERWISE have had to change their name...they are still the same band.. this is not some kind of attention seeking side project. They are now The Anti Retro Vinyls...

THE ANTI RETRO VINYLS are a four piece band out of Durban, South Africa. The band consists of brothers Greg Allan (Vocals) and Harry Allan (Guitar), and another set of brothers, Christiaan van Renen (Drums) and Carl van Renen (Bass). Drawing influences from Indie, Old School Punk, Rock ‘n Roll, Disco, Dance and Pop, their music is a blend of creative, dirty-sounding guitars and smooth, punchy bass lines over loud disco/punk/rock beats, with Greg's unique voice tying together the mix to create catchy, party-hard, rock-out dance music with attitude.

They released their debut album “She Doesn’t Care, She Wants to Dance” in July 2010, subsequently securing a national distribution deal with Look and Listen stores. Their debut single “Can I Kiss You” has been playlisted on campus radio stations all over the country (including TUKSFM, UJFM, MFM and KOVSIE FM) and also made it to Number 1 on Jon Savage’s Local Rock Chart on 5fm. The band has played on some of the biggest stages in the country, including Splashy Fen and Thornfest. They’ve performed with such luminaries as Shaun Morgan, Fokofpolisiekar, Van Coke Kartel, Taxi Violence, aKing, Straatligkinders, CrashCarBurn, Stealing Love Jones, Prime Circle, Cassette, Wrestlerish and many more.

They have recently completed shooting the video for “Can I Kiss You” and are currently
working on a new, as yet untitled E.P.

Venue Review
Mercury Live, 45 DeVilliers Street, Zonnebloem
Aidan Harper
test
Mercury’s been around for some time as one of the definitive music venues in Cape Town, first starting off as The Jam and then being re-branded Mercury Live and Lounge by the new ownership. I’ve been to this venue countless times over the years and have seen it’s metamorphosis across the board from fledgling dodgy upstairs/downstairs live music venue to the self proclaimed “Home Of Great South African Bands” that it is now.
Mercury is certainly home to a diverse number of music themes and genres depending on which night you go. For instance, Mercury is synonymous with their Manic Monday student nights which entails much quaffing of cheap alcohol and a mass of bodies on the dance-floor which trails all the way outside to the block-long queues that make Mondays it’s most popular night. Occasionally there’s a band or two downstairs. Labelled as the “Six Gun Sessions” there is all manner of first time garage-bands cutting their teeth on the lounge stage downstairs hopeful in proving themselves worthy of a stint on the upstairs main stage. Wasted Wednesdays is more of a live music showcase where Fridays and Saturdays are reserved for the more established bands. The main stage has seen the likes of bands such as Seether, The Beat, Hog Hoggidy Hog, Nine and Sugardrive to name a few. Primarily a rock orientated venue, you are bound to have a fair experience of what a live music venue should be. If you’re not into listening to the band there’s retro DJ’s downstairs. There’s also regular theme evenings for the Drum ‘n’ Bass and Dubstep folllowers.
With any live music venue, occasionally sound and lighting suffers the finger gremlins and you have to wait quite a while at the bar, but all in all one of the few venues that I attend on a regular basis that makes you feel at home. The staff are friendly and the facilities kept clean. I also like the fact that at any one time there are members of other bands going along to support their comrades belting it out on stage.
Parking can be a bit of a nightmare on busy nights and there’s a big crowd spill-over into The Shack next door where you can play a game of pool or grab a bite to eat while waiting for the bands to start.
Mercury is a venue that has kept its integrity as one of the original live music venues in Cape Town and this shows with the calibre of acts that have graced the main stage. For any band, this is the primary testing ground. Once you’ve played Mercury, you have just a little bit more credibility on your CV. For the media and industry people to get a scoop on ‘the next big thing’  then Mercury is a great showcase venue. It doesn’t matter who, where or what you are: you have to visit Mercury at least once in your lifetime.

The Chat…
Interviewer: Da Lemon Terrorist
test
Operation: “Rude Rock Shakedown” – Interview.
Objective: Gather Intel.
Location: Zula Bar, Long Street.
Band: 7th Son.

I’m posing like a celeb in the pizzeria whilst Mark photographs my yellow dome… We’re testing the light. Nic and Miggs arrive; their facial expressions are identical and I know immediately what it is… WTF! I extend my hand in an attempt to settle their concerns and assure the guys that I am here for a harmless little chat. Introductions and formalities are concluded and they each take a seat at the table. Our interview is underway and I can’t help but smirk at the fact that for the first time in my terrorist life, I get to ask the questions…. I am the interrogator!
  • LT – “Tell us more about the concept of including a DVD, ‘Making the Album’, with the album ‘Rude Rock Shakedown’”.
  • Nic – “We were doing 2 months of pre-production and were spending a lot of time in the studio. We decided that this could be a really cool thing to document. We were having such a cool time doing it and felt that others may also want to share in the process. We were fortunate enough to have a photographer on board who was working closely with us during this phase and we just went with it. It actually came out pretty well”.
  • LT – “This will also give people an idea of what musicians have to endure and how hard they actually work during the pre-production and recording phase of creating an album. People are often quick to dismiss an album and fail to realize the extensive process that goes into releasing an album”.
  • Miggs – “Yeah for sure and it was also a first for us in terms of the recording process used during the making of the album. We recorded the entire band live and wanted to encapsulate that live feeling in the end product. Drums, guitars, rhythm and vocals usually get tracked separately but not in this instance. We wanted to document the journey”.
  • LT – “Where did you guys record?”
  • Miggs – “We recorded at ‘Hey Pappa Legend Studios’ in Cape Town and the mixing and mastering went to Paul McIwer from ‘Stoneworks Recording’ in Jo’burg”.
  • LT – “What can we expect from the third album in relation to the first two albums?”
  • Nic – “The first two albums formed the basis for our growth, a growing phase which all bands need to experience before reaching their full potential. The third album encapsulates our sound we feel that this album is our definitive 7th Son album. What we were searching for when we started this band all those years ago has finally been found”.
  • LT – “The album also features a music video”.
  • Miggs – “Yeah, the new music video is going to be rad. We’re really excited to see the finished product and believe it’s going to be awesome!”
  • LT – “Tell us more about your Germany Tour, particularly the audience response to your music.”
  • Miggs – “We had a great response from crowds wherever we played in Germany and it was also a huge learning curve for us as a band. We want to go back to Europe as there is a bigger market for our music and the industry is a lot more solid.”
  • Nic – “The level of professionalism is also incredible and it was truly an eye opening experience for us. We were treated really well by people in the industry and it’s a different league altogether.”
  • Miggs – “We returned to South Africa to sort out our affairs and get our ducks in a row. We want to bump up our level of performance and head back... Do it right.”
  • LT – “Are you going to base the band in Europe?”
  • Nic – “We are looking to relocate the band next year. We plan on setting up in America for 3 to 4 months; moving onto Europe for 2 months and returning to South Africa for the remaining 6 months. April should see us in the States if all goes according to plan.”
  • LT – “Tell us about your experiences of playing for South African audiences. Do you find Cape Town audiences don’t support live bands as well as they do in other parts of the country?”
  • Miggs – “We’re from Cape Town and it’s so rad to play in front of your home crowd but it’s very different when we perform out of Cape Town in that we are more fondly accepted by people from other towns. We sold every CD at our last PE gig and were asked to sign every copy sold. People really appreciated the fact that we played in their city; It was incredible… maybe those areas don’t see as many bands perform live whereas people in Cape Town are lucky in that there are so many good performing bands in Cape Town.”
  • Nic – “We love our SA fans and we always love performing at home.”
  • LT – “As SA musicians, did you experience times when you questioned or lost faith in your pursuit?”
  • Miggs – Laughs and takes a massive swig on the beer, “Hell yeah, but that passes the second you see your fans loving your stuff.”
  • LT – “What advice can you pass onto young upcoming SA bands?”
  • Nic – “Work at it every day. Let your passion and love for what you do be visible both on and off stage. Don’t give up; work at it and stay true to who you are as a band.”
  • LT – “And your message to the fans?”
  • Miggs – “Thank you for the support you’ve shown us over the years and we hope you enjoy our latest release. We appreciate everything you have given us.
  • Nic – “Yeah, the fans are amazing. We could not have achieved what we have if it weren’t for you. Go download the free tracks on our website and get your hands on the album. We hope you enjoy listening and watching it as much as we enjoyed making it. See you on stage.”
Mission complete! We say our goodbyes and the guys head backstage to prepare for the show… It’s been killer. I’m going to get my paws on that album and I’ll be sure to relay my thoughts to all who care to hear them. Have a killer day terrorists!

The Great Needletime Debate
DJ Squeek
test
The needletime debate has been raging for a number of years and still it goes on. I think that nothing short of fisticuffs in a court room is going to sort this one out. Needletime is good for the musicians as it’s another source of royalties.

SAMRO defines needletime as: Needletime, also known as ‘pay per play’, supplements the existing Performing Rights royalties by providing for recording artists and their record companies to be paid for each public performance of a recorded work. Where Performing Rights ensure that a creator of a musical work is remunerated for the public performance of their work, Needletime Rights require entities such as radio stations, restaurants and bars to pay those responsible for a recorded work for the use of their product.

As Pfanani Lishivha, POSA’s General Manager, explains, ‘SAMRO has always had the interests of all South African musicians at heart, but the law has not always allowed us to help those who perform the music as opposed to only those who compose it.

A body known as SAMPRA was appointed to collect needletime royalties from users such as restauraunts, clubs, pubs factories etc, anywhere where music is played based on area and potential number of listeners. This does get a little complex so bear with me a minute...

The debate that is raging is that CIPRO (now called CIPRA) who is part of the DTI (Department of Trade and Industry) has ireached an impasse with SAMPRA as collecting agent due to disagreements regarding legal wrangling of how the royalties are to be collected and distributed. Currently SAMPRA has collected a considerable amount of cash from ‘users’ such as venues and bars etc but the cash is being held in escrow (trust) by CIPRA - So now what?

It’s easier to explain via an article that SAMRO released on their website. The following article is reproduced by kind permission of POSA / SAMRO:

Non-payment of Needletime Rights royalties is a violation of human rights
One of the things the new democratic government had to deal with was finding lasting solutions to the problems that plaque the South African music industry. To this end the then Minister of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology, Dr Ben Ngubane, appointed a Music Industry Task Team (the MITT) to investigate various problems and challenges pertaining to the development of the music industry. The MITT comprised of members from government, music industry and civil society, as well as international experts. The MITT was tasked, amongst others, with examining the inadequacy of the legislative framework governing the industry and to make recommendations.

The MITT, following public hearings in various provinces, compiled a report with 37 recommendations. One of the recommendations made was the amendment of the copyright legislation to allow for the introduction of Needletime Rights in South Africa. This led to the amendment of the Copyright Act and the Performers Protection Act in 2002 to secure the right for musicians/recording artists and record companies to be paid when their recorded music is broadcast/used or performed in public. So, for the first time in the administration of music rights in South Africa, musicians and record companies were going to benefit when their recorded music (in the case of musicians) and their sound recordings (in the case of record companies) were broadcast/used or performed in public. The legislation was amended on the understanding that the Needletime Rights royalty would be split equally between the record company that produced the sound recording and the musicians who are featured in the track(s)...... We hope this has shed a little light on this controversial debacle.

The Black Cat Bones - ‘The Long Drive’ album release
test
The Black Cat Bones’ second album ‘The Long Drive’ is set to be released on 1 October 2011.
The album is a culmination of experiences gathered from a demanding two-year touring and
performing schedule, reflecting every emotion, every triumph, and every loss - on the road, on
stage, and in life. Following their well-received debut release ‘Silverton Swamp Songs’ (2009),
‘The Long Drive’ combines both the timeless energetic blues-rock sound of the band with a new, mature and innovative approach to their music. Well known songwriter Koos Kombuis calls it ‘a fusion of Blues and Rock n Roll, but they do it so damn good that it sounds like something totally new...’

‘The Long Drive’ was recorded between May and September 2011 at Wolmer Records together with SAMA award-winning producer Lanie van der Walt, and combines the song writing skills of vocalist Kobus de Kock jr and guitarist Andre Kriel with the infectious rhythmic offerings of Chris van der Walt on Bass and Keyboards and Jason Hinch on drums and percussion. The album contains 10 original tracks featuring the breathtaking vocal harmonies of Tammy Wilson (Southern Gypsy Queen), as well as a slow but fervent version of Janis Joplin’s ‘Ball and Chain’ with Jacob Wulana from ‘Tidal Waves’ fame on Hammond Organ. The songs range from honest and soulful compositions that touch on everyday adversities to hard-driving Blues-with-attitude, unmistakably matching the intensity of their live shows.
The first single ‘The Long Drive’ is set to hit the airwaves in late September, followed by launch events at The Radium Beer Hall in Orange Grove, Johannesburg (01 October), and Cafe Barcelona in Elardus Park, Pretoria (14 October). The official Media launch will be held on Tues 4 October at Steak n Ale in Lyttelton, Centurion. (Media bookings can be e-mailed to andre.kriel@gmail.com)

A coastal tour between 15 – 31 December will see the band live at Cape Town venues such as Die Boer, Plaas Teater, and Berties to mention a few. Official tour dates to be announced soon.

Other upcoming events include:
17 September - Harley Davison Club (Rivonia) / 08 October – Wolmer Biker & Blues Fest
(Pretoria) / 22 October – STRAB Fest (Nelspruit) / 28 October – Cool Runnings (Melville) / 29
October – Mojos (Welkom) / 10 November – State Theatre (Pretoria) / 26 November – Table

WARNING: A Cape Town entertainment venue has a Hi-Tech CCTV Security System featuring “a state of the art built-in facial recognition system”, the kind used by the CIA at the Pentagon and other military installations throughout the USA but which cannot “disseminate facial structure when concealed by a mask”… or so I’m told.  “Educated assessments” of individuals donning masks can be attributed to images appearing in comic books and on posters stuck to the interior walls of Police stations. The “baddies” are almost always depicted as masked, faceless, evil villains, usually wielding a weapon of some form. My “educated assessment” of bouncers is that they spend far too much time reading comics or doing too much “time”. There are beginnings and ends….. This is my beginning.

I report for my assignment on time as ordered. I am denied access by club security and as I find myself left out in the cold, I get the distinct feeling that I am about as welcome as Julius Malema at an AWB Langarm bash. My contact on the inside assures the “muscle” that I am not a threat to national security - again - and that I had been specifically invited to cover the ‘7th Son’ album launch. I am led through the club by a large gentleman dressed in black who unlocks a door leading into a secluded alley adjacent to the lower level dance floor. I am instructed to unmask as a “precautionary measure”. I comply but notice the lack of hi-tech CCTV cameras in the “interrogation area”. I distort my face, in an attempt to disguise my true identity, to the point of jaw dislocation. My facial features resemble that of a Yak suffering from a bout of constipation and I am immediately instructed to pull the mask back over my head. I am a free terrorist and am finally permitted to wonder upstairs to check out the stage area. It’s a beautiful place, a rock pedestal where live music is delivered into the open arms of the masses. I take time to savour the moment and become submersed in its magnificence. I head back downstairs to prepare for my scheduled interview with the band. Mark, my photographer for the evening, is waiting patiently in the pizzeria and rearing to go. We’re both excited and it’s good to have a little company whilst working an assignment. We’re joined by Nic and Miggs a few minutes later. They are visibly excited about the upcoming show and their enthusiasm is contagious. I’m sold even before sitting down to do the interview.

The interview goes well, we wish the guys all the best for the show and decide to kill some time at The Purple Turtle before returning to the “rock pedestal” above. Marius welcomes us as brothers and we’re ushered into the smoky abyss that is ‘The Turtle’. ‘Like Knives’ are shredding on stage, rock mayhem is erupting on the floor and I have come home. I engage in mindless chit chat with a few questioning rockers whilst keeping a close eye on the time. Whilst leaving the venue, we meet a few killer rock music DJ’s who are scheduled to take the party into the wee hours of the morning after the bands have leveled the stage. We walk 100 meters up Long Street, re-enter the club and are officially back on duty…. Shhh, don’t tell ‘Da Boss’. Mark positions himself at the foot of the stage where he will be afforded an unobstructed view of the band whilst I ready myself with notepad and pen near the rear of the room. This allows me to gauge sound quality, audience reaction and band performance in relative peace. People generally focus their attention towards the stage area at gigs and my position ensures that I am not bombarded with silly questions during the performances. “Are you disfigured?”; “Who are you?”; “How am I supposed to kiss you?”…. Yes, I was actually asked that by a young lass whilst I stood quietly in a corner of the room. Questions are cool and I’m happy to explain my presence; just not whilst making crucial notes on a band’s performance.  My “out of site; out of mind” approach is a means to an end and it keeps me focused on my objectives.

It’s time; ‘7th Son’ emerge on stage and their presence is immediately felt. The recent Germany tour has equipped these guys with an edge and instilled in them a quality, gained only through performing to an international audience. They exude the confidence lacking in most young local performing bands and their energy fills the entire room before the first note is delivered. The powerful Ska beat is catchy and dread-locked heads begin bobbing and pulsing rhythmically in its swell. This is Africa’s gift to the world; a defined Chandra with a distinctive edge…. Electric guitar! I’ll admit that I am not the greatest fan of Reggae, I find it a little boring and monotonous. This however, is reggae on steroids… a Pit-bull with dreads! I refuse to remain seated any longer, I place the pen in my pocket, stash my notes and join the ‘Smarties’ (WOTALOTIGOT) on the floor. The audience varies so dramatically in race, age, style and gender, but all have a common centre. The music is original and real and even a few of the older tracks from their first two albums, ‘Fire in the Rain’ and ‘Ontology’, are delivered with renewed vigor. ‘Tokyo’ thunders through the venue, driving the crowd nuts. First timers know this song and they’re introduced to the originators first hand… the penny drops and they realize who this band is. The band delivers a solid world class performance. The ‘Rude Rock Shakedown’ album launch is a success; except for three tiny details… There were no albums available for purchase on the night, I leave the gig with a strange desire to alter my hairstyle, and develop a strong craving to visit the ‘Tree of Knowledge’.

I plan on getting my terrorist paws on a copy as soon as I can. Their unique approach to music is mirrored in the new ‘Rude Rock Shakedown’ album. The album consists of two 7 track EP’s with the first 7 tracks being made available for free download at www.7thson.co.za. The album will also include 5 bonus tracks and a DVD documentary featuring a short ‘Making The Album’ video along with a few music videos. 7th Son is a super talented SA band with the guts to show the world what South African artists have to offer. Their continued commitment to their craft, unwavering work ethic and ability to reinvent themselves as musicians is paying off. 7th Son is going places and they’re taking SA with them. It’ll be well worth the time and money to go check these guys out if you haven’t yet had the opportunity to do so. Stay posted for the full interview which I am currently piecing together. This is my end…and so I leave you with three helpful tips: Get your hands on that album, celebrate SA music, and if you ever see me running at speeds a Cheetah would be proud of…. Try keep up; it may be a bomb! BOOOM.

Music Therapy Clinic
test
The Music Therapy Community Clinic provides music therapy services to under-resourced areas in Cape Town, specifically the Cape Flats areas. Music therapy is a therapeutic psychotherapy which uses music as its medium. It’s a non-verbal therapy where therapist and client engage in music together. Through improvisation on a variety on instruments, as well as song writing and movement, a therapist helps a client process difficult emotions (e.g. history of abuse, death of family member, trauma such as fires, being hospitalised, or having AIDS).

They have 4 projects, and each one has a Music Therapy aspect where they provide psycho-social support through individual and group music therapy sessions run by qualified music therapists; and a Music for Life aspect where music therapists and community musicians run marimba, djembe drumming, choir, and gumboot dancing groups.

Their 4 projects work in a variety of settings:

An HIV/AIDS project in Khayelitsha, where they work with children and adults affected by HIV/AIDS.
A Music for Health (medical) project running at the Brooklyn Chest TB Hospital and the Sarah Fox children's convalescent hospital.
A Trauma project, which provides much-needed therapy services to children in 9 schools in the Athlone area.
A community training project, which trains educare and primary school teachers how to use music to teach social and life skills in the classroom.

To work as a music therapist in SA, one needs a master’s degree in Music Therapy which is only available through the University of Pretoria. Upon graduation, a music therapist must register with the Health Professionals Council of SA. There are currently 38 qualified music therapists in SA of which 7 are in the Western Cape.

Their website is www.music-therapy.org.za and you can also find them on Facebook (the music therapy community clinic) if you'd like some more information about the clinic and about music therapy in general.

Honeymoon in a Crowded House
MyMusicMatrix and SA Weddings
It's not often that a story such as this unfolds anywhere else except Hollywood, but here we are.... One of our photo-journalists, Catherine Gray-Bremer, was standing next to Dapne, the lady who was involved... emailed me this note:

Hey Aidan - remember the 2010 CROWDED HOUSE article (  )I wrote for MyMusicMatrix which featured the cute side-story about the couple standing next to me who got engaged during the CT concert. Well that couple are really getting married and asked me to ask my friends (devoted romantics the lot of you...♥) to please vote for their dream honeymoon (lol!). Everybody go Awwww! And PLEASE VOTE if you've got half a ♥!! (I'll post the link below). Who knows, a bit of free advertising for MMM :) x Cath

This is the story from the bride-to-be that was published in SA Weddings... Read the story and please vote for them to win a honeymoon of a lifetime! Link to vote is at the bottom of the article...

Our Story - Gareth and Daphne:

Wow! Where do I begin...I always thought my Fiancé would propose in a big way – but I was still shocked when it all happened! And it was absolutely perfect…

For all the years we have been together, we have always loved Crowded House (the band). When he heard that they were touring SA in 2010, he bought golden circle tickets for us. Without me knowing, he started emailing the band and posting letters on their website, explaining that he wants to propose at the concert. He had been transferred to CT a few months before this, and I was still in PE, not certain as to where our relationship was heading at that time, but knowing that it could not mean the end to our enchanted love story..

On the night of the concert, he was so nervous. It was adorable! I had no idea what he was Jplanning, and kept telling him to relax, because it’s just a concert  If only I had known!

We were standing right in front up against the stage when the band called Gareth up on stage (apparently he had thrown a piece of paper onto the stage reminding them of the proposal). I couldn’t stop smiling – and the tears started when I realized what he was doing. I always wondered why some ladies cry, and now I know! It really is an emotional moment when you realize that the man you love is going to ask you to spend the rest of your life with him.

He stood on the stage, and told the audience how much he loves me, and my daughter, Lara - 6yrs old, and that he wants to propose. The crowd went crazy!! It was really a feeling like no other, with around 7000 people screaming, and clapping…. nothing could top that for me! There were even one or two ladies standing around me that had a tear of their own (the hopeless romantics!!). Gareth took the ring out and went down on his knee, asking me to marry him.

I’m not very good with public speaking, but I managed to first tell him that he’s crazy! Then I said YES and I LOVE YOU.. Neil Finn of Crowded House then sang a song about the proposal for a few minutes – it was AWSOME!!! I couldn’t even think straight for the rest of the concert – I was in dream land…

After the concert, we had hundreds of people wanting to say congratulations – it was our 15 min of fame and a total dream come true for me in terms of a proposal!

A journalist happened to be standing next to me at the concert and she posted something on the web about the concert with one paragraph around the proposal. She refers to the proposal as “The most magical moment of the concert.”

Album Review
The Rescu - The Rescu
Aidan Harper
test
Production on any album is paramount to its (and the artist’s) success. The Rescu’s self titled album is no exception. A well balanced and slick sound. No wonder when the members of the band run a well known music store in Cape Town.
This band claims that they formed by accident when they supported Stealing Love Jones which was meant to be a one-off gig. Lucky for us that they continue to grace our stages.

“Beautiful Life” is one of my favourite tracks. “Say Goodbye” lends itself to one of those solo stage ballads where everyone has their lighters... Sorry... Cellphones in the air. I think it would have been a little bit richer with a cello or some strings in the background.
All in all a very listenable album with one or two gems included for good measure.

Look out for them live at a venue near you. You can also visit their official Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.157464074292042.36408.157463550958761&type=1) and listen to some of their tracks

Rocking It Up In Stellies!
Aidan Harper
After spending the best part of Wednesday in Somerset West I drove through to Stellenbosch in the anticipation of watching Fokofpoliesiekar perform at the Klein Libertas Theatre. OK… so it’s been a while since I was there so I get hopelessly lost, and finally just decide to follow the main stream of traffic. It paid off. I’m sure that the whole of Stellenbosch’s student contingent and the die-hard FPK fans were already there. It’s also been a while since I stood in a queue that long so I had a bit of time to survey my surroundings. I must say that it was as near perfect a day for an outdoor gig and feelings of festival-fever welled up inside me as this was so close to being a summer mini festival all, on its own. Primary colour of attire was black as per the usual alternative/metal gig so I felt a little out of place in a Tweed jacket!

Finally I’m through the gate and manage to catch the tail end of the Pretty Blue Guns set. To quote The Sweet: “The atmosphere was positively hectic!”, but not a ballroom in sight… just a seething mass of black bodies from the stage to the sound desk… This really was a mini-festival! I must say that I was a little disappointed with their set as they were not as tight as I remember them and the vocalist was doing his best to stay in tune.

Chatting to Dawid from Klein Libertas Theatre and organiser of Ramfest, there’s going to be a lot of cool stuff happening their side regarding the Ramfest Festival 2012 and the Theatre! I can’t divulge anything just yet but watch this space! If you’ve not been to KLT before then a visit has to appear on your bucket list.

A roar from the crowd as Fokofpoliesiekar hit the stage. The last time I saw them live was at their video launch a year ago! All I can say is WOW! I was blown away by their performance. The whole gig was extremely tight from the arrangements to the stage presence. The sound and lighting were phenomenal – Hats off to Lindsay and the Hellfire crew for that one.

The thing about this concert that impressed me the most was the support from the fans. The audience was singing along to almost every song as one entity. This is real fan power. I strongly suggest that the Cape Town audiences take a leaf out of the Stellenbosch book of “how To Support Your Favourite Band”. I was mesmerised by the sheer presence of this band on stage. They are truly an SA rock ‘n’ roll band in every sense of the word. Expect some great things from these guys. I left the gig with a feeling of pride and a sense of knowing that I had just witnessed something special.

Juke Royal Launch at &Union - September 10th 2011

Tonight was a night I was quite excited for. I was on my way to review Juke Royal and their launch at &Union in town. I had heard good things of Juke Royal, this self-proclaimed “rock band from the ashes of reggae” and was looking forward to wrapping my laughing gear around the venue that is &Union.

The weather had turned a bit foul on the way to the gig with it being a chilly, windy night in the city centre. On first impression, the venue looked cosy, but what I was really interested in was trying one of their much-talked-about beverages. What &Union try to do, is place themselves as an upmarket beer garden and for the most part they pull it off. It has a very elegant look and feel and the rather expensive beers are quite tasty. Alas, sometimes you just want a Black Label draught, and here you are not going to get it.

Then Juke Royal started their set. Juke Royal is a four-piece band consisting of Rob -vocals and bass, Luke - drums, Dayne – guitar, keys, backup vocals, and Jono – guitar. Their music is a unique party rock with “catchy melodies and a warm southern feel” and let me tell you, I was very impressed with these guys. They had a nice roll out of music from the EP Maiden Voyage, and my feet couldn’t stop having a jam. Rob on the vocals is smooth and its been a long time that I have heard an artist in such command of his voice. Not to mention that he also plays the bass… and they say men can’t multitask! Speaking of multitasking, Dayne is the backbone of funk in this band. The sound of his keyboard puts the band in a league of their own. Juke Royal is also gifted in a talented drummer, Luke, and a skilled guitarist, Jono. Jono played some very cool riffs and Luke impressed me with some smashing drum work. No pun intended.

Juke Royal interacted with the crowd nicely, the sound at the venue wasn’t great, in fact it was borderline good but they acknowledged it and apologised. The music is electric and I can only wonder where the hell these guys have been hiding. If you haven’t gotten yourself their EP, do yourself a favour and go find it!

Sabretooth, Fox Comet, When Karma Sleeps, Red Huxley at Mercury 27 August 2011

Gigs at Mercury are always fun. It’s a nice intimate venue, good acoustics and lights, friendly staff and bartenders who waste no time in quenching your thirst. Not to mention that The Shack is right next door for a sneaky pre-drink and some banter.

Now on the way to the gig I was under the impression that I was only reviewing one band that night, so when I saw the line-up I could barely hide my smile. Red Huxley into When Karma Sleeps into Fox Comet and a nightcap with Sabretooth. Awesome! I cracked my knuckles, gave my writing hand a little pep talk and settled in for a night filled with talented musicians, a great crowd, the boss and an old school friend who made his bass guitar wail with glee.

Red Huxley opened the evening for us and the first thing that captured me was their super-stylish backdrop. Red Huxley is a three-piece, powerfully old school rock band consisting of Dylan on vocals and guitar, Murray on drums and percussion, and Matthew on the bass. Now I can imagine that being an opening act comes with its challenges but I did have a little frown at the lack of crowd interaction. Their music has a neat old school rock element with a very cool twinge of euro funk. Their sound is unique and lives up to their aim of cutting through the clutter. At times however, I did find the guitars to be a bit washy, but when they got it right they had a great balance and to me, that makes great music. They had a good roll out of their songs and I must admit that when I next road trip, arm out the window, wind in my hair, I need to make sure I have Red Huxley jamming in the back seat.

Next up was When Karma Sleeps. My oh my, now that’s a rocking name. The 5-piece band consists of Megan, Greg, KB, Gerard and Matthew and let me tell you that these guys and girl belt out some amazing tunes. They came on and totally owned the stage. Megan on vocals is beautiful, her voice was crystal clear and her lyrics tickled my eardrums. When Karma Sleeps has a slight darkness to their hard rock style that I haven’t heard in a while and it’s epic, at times reminding me a bit of Evanescence. Each artist pulls their weight and they create a balance of sound that I cannot wait to add to my collection. In fact, if their instruments got together and decided to start a band, they couldn’t have chosen better artists to play them and yes, vocals is an instrument. WKS is also gifted with a secret weapon… Gerard on the Bass. This guy is awesome. He completely owned his instrument and is more mesmerising than an optical illusion. He plays like a rock star, moves like a rock star and at times I had to pinch myself to remember that there were actually four other members on stage. Keep doing what you’re doing bud. It works. Where Red Huxley failed to get me loose, When Karma Sleeps did the job ten fold.

Following WKS was Fox Comet. For me, this was a treat. I have heard a lot about them but never had the privilege to see them live - and it was indeed a privilege. Fox Comet is a 4-piece melodic funk rock band that is graced with talented muso’s. Rob on vocals, harmonica and alto sax, Stephane (the little French genius) on guitar, Nick with the bass and backing vocals and Kyle, playing the Jiminy Crickets out of his drums. I had a little chat to Kyle before the gig and he told me that they didn’t even have time for a sound check, but this never hindered them one bit. Of all the bands their sound was sharp, clear and oh so musical. They had me at hello. At times they reminded me a little of Arctic Monkeys and Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Each artist comes through in their own right and Fox Comet made the stage bow to their command. Their role out was spot on with a great mix of slow funk rock and some energising beauties such as “Ginja Ninja”. If you haven’t heard it, do yourself a favour and find it. Fox Comet’s music reminds me of the weekend almost as much as Rob’s floral shirt did. Fox Comet as a whole was inspiring but I must make special mention of Kyle on the drums and Stephane on the electric. They awed me. Rob never let us forget that we were jamming and his interaction with the crowd made me feel like we had been friends forever. For a band that hadn’t “gig’d” in two months, welcome back boys, I just hope unlike Halley’s, Fox Comet is around more often. Not funny? Oh well, I tried…

Last, but definitely not least was Sabretooth. Sabretooth is an 80’s inspired progressive hard rock band that is filled to the brim with technical, talented musicians. There are six members who include Mauri on vocals, Charles and Dean on guitars, Nikolai on the keys, Ryan on the bass and Damian on drums. I had not seen these guys live yet but from what I had heard, they blew away international acts at Ramfest - and I can totally understand why. As the last band, they had a rather large challenge and Fox Comet had left some big shoes to fill, but these blokes didn’t disappoint. Their 80’s inspired Hard Rock can sometimes be a tad dark and twisted but, holey smokes, does it just work. Sabretooth is not an assault on your ears but an absolute pleasure. Nikolai on the keys is revolutionary; he tilts the board to face the crowd, almost playing upside down. Drums were beyond perfect and all three guitars were screaming as they were played to their absolute best. These guys are so rock and roll and totally owned the stage. They performed some covers and, as a wise man once said to me, “ When doing a cover, you either make it your own and own it or you do it spot on”. Sabretooth was spot on. As I sit here writing this article, I just feel inadequate. Sabretooth brings tears to my eyes as I realise that my command of the English language is seriously weak, as I am struggling to find the words to describe to you how supremely talented and balanced this band is. If you haven’t heard of them, find out where they are performing next and do yourself a favour… be there. If you’re lucky enough, you might just be able to latch onto one of their coat tails, as Sabretooth soar to greatness.

Thank you for coming out!

Forever a SOUTH AFRICAN - Kahn Morbee Speaks Out
Muffy
test
Muffy is our regular gossip and newshound. Every month, Muffy will bring you the latest gossip, opinions, celeb scandal and more... Muffy will also be interviewing some of your favourite music celebrities.

This month Muffy talks about patriotism and corporate bollocks...

For a mutt with his ears to the ground (or at least closer to the ground) I’m sure all you human types with any form of TV set has seen the spate of ads featuring a sountrack by the Parlotones... i mean, these guys are everywhere! My low-down is that i’ve overheard so many people (lovers and haters of the band) say... “These guys have sold out to the corporate world...” Please take the time and read the whole article...

I’d like to bring your attention to a certain chicken product from the land of Oz (NOT Austrailia you silly human!!). Wayback when Parlotones started their TV ad fame the same question was raised, so I’d like to reprint an article by Parlotones frontman Kahn Morbee that appeared on 2OceansVibe site and appeared on the MyMusicMatrix.com website on Friday, June 18, 2010 as I think that this is very pertinent to the current quandry...

Kahn says:

I do not normally reply to the hate because tastes do differ, but what is at question here is my patriotism, of which I have an over abundance of. So for once I will speak out and there will undoubtedly be opinions somehow laced with hate, a trait I do not possess and which considering our past, is a trait we should all attempt to extinguish. I do not care that some of you may call us corporate whores, as some of those very people spewing out that comment trundle 2 hours (there and back) through traffic to sit for 8-9 hours (sometimes more) beneath the neon lights of what? Ah ha...a corporate! Usually you’d be driving a branded car that you spend a significant chunk of your salary on for repayments, insurance, fuelling etc. All sold to you buy GIANT conglomerates. You’ll be Wearing clothing and cosmetic products from a corporate and later consuming the produce from a corporate, later settling in your home which technically a corporate bank or corporate hotel (SETH) owns! That’s right some of us work for a corporate, and some of us make a corporate work for us. Some of us do both, the question here is if you decided to name yourself GOD of the corporate whore comment, then are you truly an organic subsistence farming ‘walk everywhere’ hippy, deriving income from selling your handmade woven baskets? Either way Pick n Pay may come knocking after hearing about your awesome baskets and then what? We’re inadvertently endorsees in some form or another, some of us do it without knowing and others blatantly derive income from it SETH (your blog is laced with adverts for tyres etc.), why can’t we?

The truth is yes we did do a theme tune for a German broadcast company; the fact is that NOT for one second does anyone in the German public believe that we favour their country over ours. Here’s why, for the past 2 years of us going to Germany, we’ve spoken very little about music and very much about South Africa, politics and our beautiful country in what must be close to a few hundred interviews, where their journalists seem less prone to a personal attack on the artist. Some journalists believe that what he or she does radiates from a place of pure perfection and knowledge of ALL; somehow affording them the license to condemn, i.e. rather don’t write about what you don’t like. We’ve constantly underplayed the crime scenario even though I was personally hijacked two years ago, and robbed, pick-pocketed etc. countless times, because even though this happened I did not want to be ‘That South Africa individual’ that fuels what is now an overzealous, stereotypical view of South Africa as some warzone, and I do love my country, this is my home and will always be!

So, undoubtedly, we stand to gain by doing the German song but so too does South Africa as we paint a better more real picture and exude the fact that we love our country, so too do our other artists benefit as on many occasion we’re asked who Zolani is (as she does a duet on the album) and we recommend the many local artists we admire, writing long lists of artists to catch during the World cup and to research online, often pondering on whether or not they’d do the same for us? This song will last 4 weeks as part of an ARD (a television broadcast company) campaign to draw attention to the event and will be coupled with the highlights packages of the day. It’s just a song highlighting a South African band during a global event hosted in South Africa. How many times has Queen’s “We are the Champions” been used in a similar vein, has anyone question Freddy Mercury’s allegiance for ‘We are the Champions’ and his allegiance when he sang ‘Barcelona’?

The questions I have to ask are:

Marshall Music Cape Town is located on Heritage Square in the heart of the Mother City. Our building was completed in 1774 and is home to an incredible range of musical instruments, Heritage Sound recording studios, drum and guitar lesson studios, Gareth’s guitar service centre and the Rock Royalty coffee shop.

Did you know? Dave Mathews plays almost exclusively with Taylor guitars.
If you haven't yet taken up listening to the DMB I suggest you hone your music listening skills and buy an album from this band. The ‘sound’ is inspiring to say the least. Well of course with a Taylor at the front.
